Southern Illinois Lodging & Camping

Welcome to our family farm home (established 1944). Sassafras Hill farm is located in the heart of Southern Illinois and in the Southeast corner of Union County, four miles east of Interstate 57. This property adjoins the Cypress Creek portion of the Cache River Refuge. The present house was built in 1950 and used as a family residence until July 2009.

The geography is conducive to peaceful rejuvenating rest and plenty of pastimes. The Refuge is public hunting grounds. The most common hunting activities include deer, turkey and waterfowl.

The area is rich in vineyards producing award winning wines. Access to the wineries is now available year round. For those interested in canoeing you would enjoy visiting the Tupelo Gum/Cypress swamp area. For other non-hunters there is a myriad of possibilities such as: American Quilters Society’s annual quilt show and contest (Paducah, KY), Native American sites, hiking, biking, fishing, historical sites and visitor’s centers, Festivals (shrimp, Superman, colorfest, apple, peach, azalea-dogwood trail, etc.), state parks (Ferne Clyffe, Giant City, Union County Conservation Area, Trail of Tears, Mermet, Fort Massac, Cave-In Rock, and Dixon Springs), beautiful fall foliage, or just enjoy the peaceful serene surroundings. The closest neighbor is over a mile away.
